As a seasoned traveler who has explored the globe for over a decade, my journey took a turn in recent years as I embraced conscious travel. My earlier work demanded constant travel and as I became more conscious, I switched careers. I am still in an industry that demands travel but since I am increasingly aware of the importance of minimizing my environmental footprint. I am more in control of how I move around the world and in control of picking travels that are necessary. While it’s difficult to find a perfectly sustainable hotel, many establishments are making commendable efforts to cut down on their environmental impact. Here’s what you should look for when booking an eco-responsible hotel.
1. Certifications and Awards
Start by checking if the hotel has any recognized environmental certifications such as Green Key, LEED, or EarthCheck. These certifications indicate that the hotel meets specific sustainability standards and is committed to reducing its environmental impact. Source: Green Key Global
2. Energy Efficiency
Energy consumption is a significant factor. Look for hotels that use energy-efficient lighting like LEDs, have energy-saving appliances, and employ renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power. Some hotels might also have a smart energy management system in place.
3. Water Conservation
Water is a precious resource, and eco-responsible hotels implement water-saving measures. Check if the hotel utilizes low-flow toilets and showerheads, greywater recycling, and linen reuse programs to minimize water waste. My favourite hotel that conserved water was Cheshale Eco hotel Kenya.
4. Waste Management
A great recycling program is a hallmark of a responsible hotel and one of the most difficult ones to find in areas like my country Kenya. Look for hotels that separate recyclable materials, compost organic waste, and have minimized single-use plastics by opting for biodegradable packaging and reusable containers.
5. Sustainable Food Practices
Food miles and sourcing practices matter. Opt for hotels that source food locally, use organic and seasonal ingredients, and support local farmers. Many responsible hotels also offer plant-based menu options which have a lower environmental impact. My favourite hotel that practises this well is canbordoy hotel in Mallorca.
6. Eco-friendly Products
An eco-responsible hotel will prioritize the use of biodegradable cleaning products, eco-friendly toiletries, and sustainable in-room amenities. This reduces the hotel’s overall chemical footprint and promotes healthier guest environments. I experienced this in Vienna at …..
7. Green Building Design
Sustainability starts from the ground up. Look for hotels constructed with sustainable materials, designed to maximize natural light and airflow, and features like green roofs, which help manage energy efficiently. This takes me back to my stay at Cheshale Eco hotel Kenya and Twofingers in Czech Republic.
8. Wildlife Conservation
Ensure the hotel respects local wildlife and ecosystems. This can include policies to protect natural habitats, avoid harmful practices like using single-use plastics, and support local conservation efforts. Participating hotels often educate their guests on local wildlife and ecosystems. I experienced this at Kudu Safari Camp Tsavo
10. Eco-Friendly Transport Options
Lastly, consider how you’ll get around. Hotels that provide eco-friendly transportation options such as bicycle rentals, electric vehicle charging stations, and proximity to public transit help reduce your travel footprint even further.
